Vacations in Inverness, Scotland And 3 Fascinating Visitor Attractions Worth Visiting

The Highland city of Inverness, Scotland  is set in some of the finest countryside in Britain. In and around Inverness are a number of important historic sites, often these sites lay witness to an immeasurable amount of human suffering and violence. Thankfully Inverness has a incredible collection of tourist attractions (and the number is continually growing). In the following paragraphs I discuss 3 places to visit in Inverness Inverness Castle, Beauly Priory and Inverness Museum & Art Gallery:

Beauly Priory

In the Thirteenth century Monks, from the Valliscaulian order, set up a community at Beauly Priory. Sadly no-one has the evidence to say the factual date the settlement war founded but it is usually agreed that is was roughly sometime around 1230. Sir John Bisset, whose lands were almagamated with the Fraser’s of Lovat, was the landowner and patron of Beauly. Bisset, together with the French monks, are credited with giving Beauly its name, derived from the French for beautiful place (beau lieu). Sadly, the priory at Beauly became deserted following the 1582 Reformation and stone blocks were thieved for use the building of other structures in the area. The priory was passed into state hands in 1913, and Historic Scotland now take care of the priory ruins and site.In 1913 the priory was passed into state hands and it is cared for by Historic Scotland.

Inverness Castle

Throughout the centuries there have been many structures on the site of Inverness Castle, as far back as 1057 there was something there. King Robert I almost destroyed the first Inverness Castle. The castle which stands today was designed and built by William Burn in 1836. The magnificent red sandstone building, is perched high on a cliff gazing down over the River Ness and the cathedral on the opposite side. King James I of Scotland held parliament in Inverness Castle in the year 1427, and summoned all the Northern Chieftains to attend. Alarmingly three of these chieftains were eventually executed for asserting an independent monarchy.

Inverness Museum & Art Gallery

Situated in Inverness’s town center is the recently renovated Inverness Museum and Art Gallery which is well worth a visit especially if the weather is poor. Inside the museum one can investigate Scottish History and learn about how the Highlands are connected with the rest of the world. It is also possible to learn about the people of the Highlands, their culture and traditions. There are a lot of different collections featuring, costumes, textiles, crafts, fine arts, archaeology and wildlife.

If you are considering a vacation in the UK this year and you hope to spend a few days in Scotland, take some time to consider spending a couple of days staying in Inverness. Finding Inverness hotel accommodation online is relatively easy as the majority of establishments have their own web site.  Hotels in Inverness, small hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfasts are always of the finest quality and Scotland is renowned for hospitality of the highest order, so you can be sure of have a wonderful time.
