Planning a break abroad this summer? You certainly won’t be alone as millions of British tourists will be looking to escape the unreliable weather in the UK over the next few months. Spain remains the most popular choice and as a result hundreds of thousands of visitors are set to escape to the island of Lanzarote. Which is part of Spain despite the fact that it can be found close to the African coast.
Lanzarote is one of seven Canary Islands, which were once thought to be part of the lost continent of Atlantis, before they were conquered by the Spanish in the 1400´s. Today most visitors come from the UK – as holidays in Lanzarote have long been a firm favourite there. With the majority of British visitors opting for the charms of the islands main resort, Puerto del Carmen.
Puerto del Carmen can be found on the island south east coast just a ten minute drive from the airport. So it’s a very convenient choice as transfers take no time at all. And the resort revolves around the main beach of Playa Grande and the Old Town harbour. Which is also where the best selection of apartments and villas in Puerto del Carmen can be found.
The town used to be called La Tiñosa until it was renamed after the local saint of fishermen. But this sector of the economy has all but dried up over the last forty years as tourism has taken over. This has also helped to enlarge the town enormously, which now extends into the smaller neighbouring resorts of Los Pocillos and Matagorda. Which are joined to Puerto del Carmen by a delightful seafront promenade.
Puerto del Carmen is well known for its nightlife – and rightly so. As the mains seafront strip – which is called the Avenida de las Playas – is packed with bars and restaurants. As well as a sprinkling of nightclubs such as 928 and The Bank. Which can both be found in a part of the strip called Centro. With the party extending well into the early hours of the morning here.
Puerto del Carmen is also a good choice for families though. As the beaches here are very safe whilst there is also plenty for kids to do. Such as visiting the Rancho Texas theme park or taking a trip on the Yellow Submarine. Which sets sail on a voyage of discovery daily from the marina at Puerto Calero, which is just a ten minute drive away. There are also plenty of Lanzarote car hire offices in the resort for those who want to get out and explore the islands many attractions.
