Most divers assume that if they diving by day, you shouldn’t have to carry a flashlight. They couldn’t be more wrong. It is always better to be ready with a compact LED dive torch in case there is an unexpected emergency. Also, a deep dive during the day could be pretty dark and its safer to carry some light source if you do not want to miss out on the view.
Though it may not be necessary in case you are diving in the daytime with a lot of sunshine, it makes sense to have a light source handy if you’re going to dive deep or into cloudy water. You can observe the colorful lifeforms around you without squinting in the darkness. You can better explore the area and even venture into caves if equipped with a torch. It has to be fully charged so that you do not run out of power in the middle of your dive.
Flashlights are a very good way to light up your diving experience. You are able to peek in those dark corners where some fish are likely to hide. It is good to have backups for lights if you plan to do a night dive or have a long diving trip.
It is important to secure it to your person in some way like using a cord or attach it to your wet suit or other equipment because it has a tendency to slip out of grip and sink down. Once you lose your dive flashlight, it may not be possible to fish it back out of the bottom of the sea. It can get disorienting to make your way out in the dark.
Your diving flashlight would also allow you to contact other divers. Do decide upon a common help signal to let others know when a diver is in trouble. Hand signals can also be used quite effectively but in a dark setting, you may need to shine some light on your hand for the signal to be seen.
Be careful once you switch on lights underwater. Most aquatic life don’t mind them but you can’t be too sure. It’s wise to learn beforehand in regards to the local species and their response to intrusion. Also, it would be rude to flash a substantial beam of light into another diver’s, or for that matter, creature’s eyes. They might be blinded for a few seconds and might panic.
Follow each of the standard diving procedures and instructions. Play it by the rules and your trip will definitely be a huge success! Finally, keep it safe, for yourself and the environment.
